What's Brachytherapy

Brachytherapy is a medical therapy used for cancer treatment.
Radioactive sources deliver therapeutic doses to localised tumors,
while preserving surrounding healthy tissues.

There are three different techniques applied to different clinical cases:

  1. Interstitial brachytherapy.

  2. This device is used to defeat the prostate carcinoma.
Radioactive sources are positioned inside the treatment target and left permanently in the tissue.
The number of the seed of the implant depend on the dimensions of the gland.
The radionuclides used commonly in the clinical practice are I-125 and Pd-103.

    Endocavitary brachytherapy.

It defeats the utero, vagina, lungs tumors. A radioactive source is positioned in the cavitary
with special applicators for a determinated time interval in order to deliver therapeutic dose to the target.
The most used radionuclide is Ir-192.

    Superficial brachytherapy.

This is indicated for treatment of skin tumors. The radioactive source is positioned inside a special applicator (Leipzig Applicator), at a fixed distance from the treatment target for a certain time interval. The most used radionuclide is Ir-192.
