Brachytherapy
is
a medical therapy used for cancer treatment.
Radioactive
sources deliver therapeutic doses to localised tumors,
while preserving
surrounding healthy tissues.
There are three different techniques applied to different clinical cases:
Endocavitary brachytherapy.
It defeats the
utero, vagina, lungs tumors. A radioactive source
is positioned in the cavitary
with special
applicators for a determinated time interval in order to deliver therapeutic
dose to the target.
The most used
radionuclide is Ir-192.
Superficial brachytherapy.
This is indicated for treatment of skin tumors. The radioactive source is positioned inside a special applicator (Leipzig Applicator), at a fixed distance from the treatment target for a certain time interval. The most used radionuclide is Ir-192.
