Geant4 Low Energy Electromagnetic Physics
TSB Meeting, 16 June 2000
Recent developments
The developments take place according to the Working Group Milestones for year 2000,
that were presented at the previous TSB meeting.
- OOAD: a first design iteration in the hadron/ion domain has taken place.
- New physics: a lower energy extension for antiprotons has been developed and is going to be part of the coming public
release.
- Assessment of the physics implemented: in progress, with the goal of producing quality plots for publications.
- Testing tools:
- a major reorganization of unit, category integration and system tests has taken place;
- the documentation of all the existing tests has started;
- new unit tests have been developed;
- a new system test has been provided to the STT, to replace a retired extended example temporarily used as a system test.
- Software process: procedures for various life-cycle items have been agreed, documented and implemented.
- Physics results: a joint project with users at the Italian National Institute for Cancer Research is in progress for
the comparison of Low Energy photon processes with experimental data; comparisons with standard processes are also performed;
(excellent) results are already available on the calculation of photon attenuation
coefficients (courtesy of S. Agostinelli, F. Foppiano, S. Garelli, M. Tropeano).
Other group matters
- The working group has lost a full-time member, who had a one-year ESA contract and moved to CMS; the person was responsible
for the photon, electron and positron maintenance and developments. ESA is looking for a replacement, but it is not clear yet
whether this will be possible, and in any case a susbtantial delay is expected.
- A first meeting with a new collaborator of the PENELOPE group has resulted in a positive agreement for the implementation of
new models and lower energy extensions.
- Internal training of new collaborators is in progress.
- Contacts with user communities are continuously in progress, especially with space and medical ones.
- A Working Group meeting will take place at CERN on 26-27/6/2000, with expected wide participation.
- The Working Group welcomes the new member Ramon Nartallo (ESA), who will work on space-related activities.
- The Working Group welcomes the application of three new IGD members to join the Geant4 Collaboration (Stefano Agostinelli,
Stefania Garelli and Giovanni Santin); all of them have already been involved in a fruitful collaboration with the group.
