MARIMBO

Superconducting MgB2 dipole magnet

A project of INFN (Genoa, Milan and Frascati National Laboratories) in collaboration with ASG Superconductors

info

MARIMBO is a project aiming to demonstrate the feasibility of particle accelerator magnets  based on MgB2 conductors.

The magnet is a racetrack coil with cold iron yoke. A Columbus Superconductors tape (Ni clad, Cu stabilized, MgB2 tape) is wound onto a copper mandrel (with a cut at one end in order to reduce the dissipation due to the eddy currents). The mandrel is also used to conduction cool the coil (the magnet is cryogen free).

In order to simplify the construction and to reduce the costs, the iron yoke is not laminated (the ramp rate is limited to 10 A/s) and has structural function. The total weight is about 140 Kg.

The magnet was tested in a cryogen free test facility. It reached 263 A (2.35 T in the gap) at 8.5 K.
