How to reach the city centre
Forgetting that Genova is reachable also by ship, this page will explain how car, train and plane travellers can reach the city centre. Let's consider "city centre" the area around Piazza De Ferrari (in the photo).

By car By train By plane
Leave the motorway at the exit:
- Genova Ovest

(arriving from North or West via A7, A10, A26 motorways; in particular from Geneva)
- Genova Nervi
(arriving from South or East via A12 motorway; this is the first exit named Genova)
Then, in both cases, follow the direction signs for the City Centre. I'm afraid that for more details a map is needed.

A warning for car drivers:
it is definitely not easy to leave the car in the centre!!! Free parking is impossible and the few underground parking sites are often full.
So, the suggestion is to proceed directly to the hotel and reach the centre walking or by bus or taxi.
There is a big parking at Porto Antico (Congress site), but it is not free.

Highway map
Genova Porta Principe, usually shortened in Genova Principe and written Genova P.P., is the main station. There, people from North and West should get off the train.

You can take many buses from the bus stop in front of the station (the bus must go leftwards). You will reach the city centre in more or less 10 min.
Another important station is Genova Brignole. All the trains stopping there also stop at the Principe station, nevertheless people arriving from East or South may want to get off the train there to save time.
Many hotels are located around this station.

For people exiting the station and facing the square, the bus must go rightwards.
You will reach the city centre (piazza De Ferrari)  in 2 or 3 min.

Official train timetable
From the airport a shuttle service called Volabus provides a direct connection with Piazza De Ferrari, Principe and Brignole Stations. Usually the bus leaves the airport some 20 minutes after the plane landing. However this is not always true; it is better to check the timetable.

Note
Bus tickets are to be purchased in tobacco shops (which in Italy are identified by a black panel with a big T) or in newspaper stalls. At the two railway stations there are also special stalls of the city transportation company (the AMT).

Tickets are not sold on board. They allow you to use all the city buses, including transfers, for 90 minutes. The tickets must be validated on board with a special machine located on the rear of the bus.
