SUBATOMIC PHYSICS
INDIANA UNIVERSITY
The I.U. subatomic physics group has an active program with experiments
to study nucleon structure, nuclear dynamics, and the properties of the weak
interaction. The wide range of activities being preformed by 11 faculty members
involve leadership roles in studies of parity violation in thermal neutron-proton
capture at LANSCE, flavor and spin structure of the nucleon at RHIC with
the STAR detector, and neutrino oscillations with the miniBooNE experiment
at Fermilab. Local facilities include a 200 MeV cyclotron and a 240 MeV
synchrotron. While the major programs on these no longer include nuclear
physics, they do provide excellent facilities for development and testing.
The laboratory also provides excellent personnel infrastructure to enable
strong participation in major off-site projects. Opportunities are available

Initial appointments as research associate will be for one year, with possible
renewal for two additional years. A Ph.D. in experimental subatomic physics

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE

The Experimental Nuclear Physics Group at the University of Maryland invites
applications for a postdoctoral research associate position
to begin in
or after March, 2004. Our group currently consists of four teaching faculty,
one Research Physicist, one postdoc, and several graduate students. We are
primarily involved in electroweak physics experiments in Halls A and C at
Jefferson Lab, including the G0 Experiment in Hall C, measurements of nucleon
electromagnetic form factors in Halls A and C, and studies of hypernuclei
through kaon electroproduction. Specific projects will entail support of the
G0 backward angle program and of a measurement of the neutron electric form
factor using a polarized 3He target in Hall A, both of which are likely to
be in their data-taking phase in 2005. We are particularly interested in
candidates who will reside at Jefferson Laboratory and support these programs.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in experimental nuclear physics. The appointment
will be initially for one year, with possible renewal for up to two additional
years upon mutual agreement and availability of funds.

TENURE-TRACK FACULTY POSITION
EXPERIMENTAL NUCLEAR/HADRONIC PHYSICS
FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY
The Department of Physics at Florida International University invites applications
for a tenure track position in Experimental Nuclear and Hadronic Physics at
the rank of Assistant Professor to start in August,2004.
The Department currently has a nuclear and hadronic physics group consisting
of five experimentalists and five theoreticians who are involved in the research
program of Jefferson Lab. The preference will be given to an individual with
a strong commitment to strengthen the group's research in the field of nuclear
and hadronic physics.
The successful candidate is expected to have a strong commitment to teaching
at both the undergraduate and graduate levels as well as to supervising graduate
students at the M.S. and Ph.D levels. The candidate is expected to vigorously
seek external funding for his/her research.
Currently the department has 21 faculty in theoretical and experimental
groups in astronomy, atomic-molecular-optical physics, biophysics, nuclear
physics, particle phyiscs, polymer physics, quantum-optics and solid state
physics.
This appointment is a bridge position with Jefferson Laboratory with which
the Department has a cooperative program. For the first four years of the
appointment, the successful candidate will receive partial support from Jefferson
Lab and a reduced teaching load at FIU. Selected candidates will interview
at FIU and Jefferson Lab.

The Department of Physics at Old Dominion University is seeking a tenure-track
assistant professor in the field of experimental nuclear and/or hadronic physics.
The Physics Department at Old Dominion University has assembled strong research
groups in atomic and nuclear physics, building on the proximity of the Thomas
Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The experimental nuclear physics
group is leading programs to study nucleon spin structure functions, real
and virtual Compton scattering, medium modifications of the nucleon, the
structure of the neutron and the deuteron, and NN correlations in nuclei.

POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN
HIGH ENERGY/NUCLEAR EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICS
TO WORK ON ANALYSIS AT INDIANA
UNIVERSITY
The QCD physics group seeks a physicist to work on developing computer
code to carry out an amplitude analysis of large datasets to map out the
meson spectrum. Data in hand include event samples of up to 20M events
each from an experiment carried out at the BNL AGS. We are using a 200-CPU
cluster processor farm located on campus and a 36-CPU processor farm in
the department. Analysis and data-handling techniques will be carried
over to analyze the 1-petabyte/year data sample anticipated from the GlueX/Hall
D project at Jefferson Lab. The goal of this project is to map out the
spectrum of hybrid mesons, starting with those having exotic quantum numbers,
using a linearly polarized beam of photons at the energy upgraded CEBAF
accelerator at Jefferson Lab. The current group includes physicists from
the experimental high energy physics group and the nuclear theory center.

Assistant Professor / Canada Research Chair
in Computational Astrophysics or Computer Modeling in the Natural Sciences
The Department of Physics at the University of Regina invites
applications from outstanding scientists for a Tier II Canada Research
Chair as part of a Faculty of Science competition. In particular,
researchers in theoretical cosmology/astrophysics are invited to apply
under the category of "Computational Astrophysics" and researchers in
lattice field theory are invited to apply under the category of
"Computer Modeling in the Natural Sciences".
The present research interests of the Department include theoretical
particle physics, astro-particle physics, lattice field theory and
experimental subatomic physics. The Department has made a commitment of
strengthening and broadening both aspects of our theoretical research
effort and this competition is the first step toward this goal.
The CRC Tier II positions, funded by the Federal Government, are
prestigious appointments and are addressed to exceptional candidates in
selected areas the respective universities have identified as areas of
research strength and growth. Subatomic Physics is one such area in the
University of Regina. The Physics Department has received substantial
CFI (Canada Foundation for Innovation) grants in support of subatomic
physics research and has already filled another CRC Tier II position. As
such, the Physics Department is well placed to further build upon these
successes with additional CRC Tier II positions.
The successful candidate will join the Physics Department as a
tenure-track assistant professor beginning on July 1st, 2004 and will be
nominated for the CRC Tier II position by the University. The successful
nominee will be provided with salary and a research grant by the CRC
foundation, will have reduced teaching load within the department and
will be given priority of funding by CFI in the application that will
accompany the CRC application. Therefore, the successful nominee will
have significantly more start up funds for research than regular
appointments and he/she is also expected to apply to NSERC for
additional research support.
Each applicant must have obtained a Ph.D. degree within the last two to
six years and have a strong record of research accomplishments that has
the potential to establish leadership in the field within the next five
to ten years. Applications should include a curriculum vitae,
publication list, statement of current research and discussion of future
plans. Candidates should also arrange for at least three letters of
