Proposal of

Goals, Themes and Projects

for the Geant4 2000 Workshop

We suggest the Workshop to be organized around some main Themes, with clearly identified Goals, and complemented by Projects, coherent with such themes and goals.

The ideas and proposals presented below have collected a wide consensus from discussions within the Low Energy Electromagnetic Physics Working Group and with other Geant4 Collaborators at CERN and ESA.

Goals

Improving the "friendliness" of the users' impact with Geant4
Improving the quality of our software products and activities
Promoting the application of Geant4 to relevant domains, that have been less emphasised so far

Themes

Consistently with the goals above, the following themes have been identified as the Workshop focus:

Geant4 & Interactivity involving User Interface, connection with Analysis Tools etc.
Geant4 Training involving the assembly of the Training Kit
Geant4 Software Process Improvement involving the critical evaluation of the results of the assessment and the discussion of what and how to improve
Geant4 Applications to Accelerator simulations including also medical applications, radiation studies etc.

Projects

To facilitate the achievement of the goals and a concrete progress on the relevant themes, a set of related hands-on projects is proposed:

The Space Example Project

A real-life application, equipped with
interactive UI, AIDA tools for histogramming,
advanced visualisation facilities

With the goal to release it as an example to be included in the December release
The starting point would be one of the existing LowE WG "Space Examples" (a X/gamma-ray telescope), on which a collaboration with Analysis Tools experts has been already discussed and agreed
The Training Kit Project

The accomplishment of the first version of
Geant4 Training Kit

According to the User Requirement Document previously agreed by the TSB
With the goal to have a first version ready for deployment at the end of the Workshop, to be "tested" on local LAL volunteer users
The existing material can be the starting point for the re-elaboration of the contributions from all the WGs, to be complemented by one or more exercises (from the CERN School of Computing?)
The Treatment Head Project

An application for the simulation of a Treatment Head for radiotherapy

Medical physics experts in the Collaboration can contribute to define the specifications, UR etc.
With the goal of having a first working version at the end of the Workshop, as well as UR for future design and development of more general facilities

These projects are meant to involve all the Working Groups into common activities and goals. They can be an invaluable approach:
