The Cuore Experiment

Visione dal basso del rivelatore di CUORENeutrinos are the most mysterious among the particles of the Standard Model. Ettore Majorana, back in the ‘30s, has developed a theory about their nature, but after almost 80 years we do not know yet whether neutrino are Dirac particles, like all others in the Standard Model, or Majorana particles.   The CUORE experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso searches the so called neutrino-less double beta decay, the only known observable which disentangle the two theories. The experiment is made with about 1 ton of tellurium-oxide crystals operated as bolometers at a typical temperature of 10 mK. This very low temperature for such a large mass is obtained with one of the most powerful dilution refrigerators ever built. The Genova group is responsible of part of the electronics, of data acquisition, on the development of ultra-cleaning techniques, and on data analysis.
